Position Summary

Under guidance, is responsible for the administrative, financial and operational management of the department\. This role also provides and oversees health care to laboratory animals maintained at Weill Cornell Medicine and occasionally at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, consistent with department, institutional, local, state and federal regulation and AAALAC accreditation standards

Job Responsibilities

+ Ensures compliance with departmental and institutional standard operating procedures and with local, state and federal regulations and/or accreditation standards\. Ensures staff understands and adheres to these regulations and guidelines\.

+ Maintains inventory of supplies, equipment and/or reagents\. May order supplies/equipment/reagents as authorized or ensure that needs are escalated appropriately\. Receives supply orders and confirms accuracy of delivery\. May assist with cost control\.

+ Develops and implements policies and procedures related to billing and compliance and audit processes\.

+ Maintains appropriate anesthetic, surgical and animal health records\.

+ Provides oversight of large animal preventive medicine and the program for evaluating, identifying and treating sick animals\. Monitors animals to assess their health\. Independently evaluates and assesses common disease conditions and escalates issues\.

+ Administers clinical treatment to animals, collects diagnostic and environmental samples, and administers euthanasia when necessary\.

+ Coordinates the scheduling and general operations of the operating room utilized for procedures, including preparation and sterilization of surgical instruments and supplies\. Prepares and ensures the proper functioning of equipment prior to procedures\.

+ Assists with surgical procedures, and in the pre\- and post\-operative care of laboratory animals\. Monitors anesthetized animals during surgical procedures\.

+ Maintains and overseas the operation of the veterinary services pharmacy and dispenses supplies, medication and controlled substances to investigators\. Maintains appropriate records for controlled substances\.

+ May evaluate new equipment and obtain quotes and provide recommendations for capital and non\-capital equipment\.


+ Bachelor's Degree in related field


Approximately 2 years of related experience in the field of laboratory animal medicine Approximately 1\+ year supervisory experience is highly desired

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

+ 5 \+ years of experience will be considered in lieu of a Bachelor's Degree in related field\.

Licenses and Certifications

+ AALAS certification at Laboratory Animal Technologist \(LATG\) level

+ Academy of Surgical Research Certification is highly desired

Working Conditions/Physical Demands

Position requires the occasional lifting of heavy animals \(dogs, pigs, sheep, non\-human primates\); Potential exposure to animal bites and scratches, needles or other sharp instruments, infectious agents, radioisotopes, toxic chemicals and/or radiation; Must be able to handle fractious animals; Must be flexible to work long hours, weekends and holidays as needed
