Position Summary



The primary responsibilities of the Teaching Specialist in English as a Second Language will be to provide teaching support to the faculty and students in the foundation program English as a Second Language courses \(lectures and tutorials\)\. Currently, ESL offerings within the WCM\-Q foundation program include two student\-centered credit courses \(ENINT 1001 and 1002\) offered in the Fall and Spring semesters, respectively, one TOEFL module offered in the Fall semester, a reading lab, and tutorials as needed\. Primary activities of the Teaching Specialist will relate to small group and one\-on\-one student teaching, reading lab coordination as well as assisting with the assessment\.



The Teaching Specialist is also expected to provide support to a writing\-intensive pre\-medical Foundations of Ethics course, as well as to strongly engage in the community outreach programs under the guidance of the director of Student Recruitment and Outreach\.



At the request of the Associate Dean for Premedical Education, all Teaching Specialists may be asked to support other courses and activities, including but not limited to, student outreach and recruitment\.

Job Responsibilities



+ Attends all course lectures, tutorials, briefing and review sessions \(as requested by supervising faculty member\) and maintains student attendance records\.

+ Remains current with the course content and learns new content as course evolves\.

+ Holds formal walk\-in office hours for small\-group or one\-on\-one student help as well as meets with students upon request by appointment\.

+ Supports the students in other productive ways when necessary, including additional small group tutorial/help sessions prior to examinations or when appropriate\.

+ Assists faculty in the creation of course and practice materials, including answer keys, for students\. Participates in and/or facilitates review sessions as requested by faculty member\.

+ Assists faculty in proctoring quizzes and examinations as well as assist with grading of hand\-in assignments, essays, papers, quizzes and exams, as required\.

+ Assists in maintaining current course content on the WCM\-Q Learning Management System, including building new content modules, uploading files, preparing online quizzes, sending broadcast messages to students, etc\.

+ Coordinates students creative projects, including but not limited to, the Annual Student Publication\. Attends the Career Medical Seminar and monitors student engagement\.

+ Provides support to the Foundations of Ethics course as required by the faculty of record\. Typically, this involves attending all course lectures, review sessions, proctoring quizzes, grading papers, and maintaining attendance records\.

+ Provides teaching support for relevant precollege programs offered to prospective students, teachers/couselors and other community members\.

+ Supports student recruitment pipeline projects as needed and in collaboration with the Office of Student Recruitment and Outreach\.

+ Provides broad support across the disciplines and premedical curriculum as a whole, based on relevant skills and training, and at the request of the Associate Dean for Premedical Education\.

+ May be asked to assist in other premedical courses within expertise, such as First Year Writing Seminar and other courses\.

+ May be asked to proctor during exams in courses outside primary responsibility\.

+ May be asked to support students in their preparation for the Medical College Admissions Test \(MCAT Critical Analysis & Reasoning Skills\)\.



Education



+ Bachelor's Degree



Experience



Bachelor's degree in the discipline of instruction \(or closely related field\)\. Graduate degree preferred\.



College level teaching experience\.



Three years of teaching experience in an intensive academic preparation program, a Writing Center, or a similar environment that serves the language needs of adult ESL learners would be desirable\.



Knowledge of academic writing and reading teaching strategies, composition, and ESL pedagogy would be an advantage\.



Strong classroom management skills, proven organizational and planning skills would be desirable\.



Knowledge, Skills and Abilities



+ Knowledge of the North American style education system\.

+ Excellent oral and written communication skills\.

+ Cross\-cultural sensitivity, previously demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse populations and cultures\.

+ Basic proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite of products including Word, Excel and PowerPoint and Mac Mail\.

Weill Cornell Medical College in Qatar was established in 2001 as a partnership between Cornell University and Qatar
