Position Summary



The primary responsibilities of the Teaching Specialist \(Biochemistry\) will be to provide teaching support to the faculty, laboratory staff and students in the Premedical Biochemistry courses \(lectures and tutorials\)\. Currently, the Biochemistry offerings within the WCM\-Q Premedical curriculum include two lecture\-based courses offered in the Fall and Spring semesters and one laboratory\-based course offered in the Spring semester\. Primary activities of the Teaching Specialist will relate to small group and one\-on\-one student teaching, reading lab coordination as well as assisting with assessment\.



At the request of the Associate Dean for Premedical Education, all Teaching Specialists may be asked to support other courses and activities, including but not limited to, student outreach and recruitment\.



Job Responsibilities



+ Attends all course lectures, recitations, briefing and review sessions \(as requested by supervising faculty member\) and maintains student attendance records\.

+ Remains current with the course content and learns new content as course evolves\.

+ Holds formal walk\-in office hours for small\-group or one\-on\-one student help as well as meets with students upon request by appointment\.

+ Supports the students in other productive ways when necessary, including additional small group tutorial/help sessions prior to examinations or when appropriate\.

+ Assists faculty in the creation of course and practice materials, including answer keys, for students\. Participates in and/or facilitates recitations and review sessions as requested by faculty member\.

+ Assists faculty in proctoring quizzes and examinations as well as assists with grading of hand\-in assignments, essays, papers, quizzes and exams, as required\.

+ Assists in maintaining current course content on the WCM\-Q Learning Management System, including uploading files, preparing online quizzes, sending broadcast messages to students, etc\.

+ Responsible for being effectively in\-charge during the formal laboratory sessions, with faculty member\(s\) presence as support to assist in supervision of students, as needed\.

+ Prepares and delivers brief pre\-lab presentations at the beginning of lab sessions and responsible for communicating and enforcing proper laboratory safety protocols to students as well as leading by example\.

+ Performs experiments and/or technical procedures prior to the laboratory sessions and assists laboratory staff in setting up for weekly experiments\.

+ Performs small group and/or one\-on\-one instruction to students in the proper and safe operation of laboratory instruments \(e\.g\. HPLC, Gel electropheresis, IR, NMR, UV\-vis\) as well as data processing\.

+ Assesses student performance during in\-lab sessions and provides grading of lab reports, samples etc\. as required\. Also assists in the development of new laboratory experiments\.

+ Primarily responsible in the Biochemistry courses\. However, based on relevant skills and training, and at the request of the Associate Dean for Premedical Education, may be asked to assist in alternative ways\.

+ As needed, in other courses within expertise, proctors during exams in courses outside primary responsibility, supports students in preparation for Medical College Admissions Test, assists in pre\-college and/or outreach activities\.

+ As needed, delivers review or remediation sessions during study breaks or summer period, acts as general resource/support person for Premedical faculty and staff with Learning Management System\.

+ Performs other duties as assigned by the Associate Dean for Premedical Education or faculty\.



Education



+ Bachelor's Degree



Experience



Bachelor's degree in the discipline of instruction \(or closely related field\)\.



Graduate degree from a North American style education system preferred\.



3 years of previous teaching and/or tutoring experience preferred\.



Previous research experience would be desirable\.



Proficiency with a variety of laboratory instrumentiation, including HPLC, Gel electrophoresis, IR, NMR, and UV\-vis desirable\.



Proficiency with molecular visualisation tools such as PyMOL would be a plus\.



Ability to suport the delivery of Foundation, General and Organic chemistry courses desirable\.



Knowledge, Skills and Abilities



+ Knowledge of the North American style education system\.

+ Advanced verbal/written English communication and presentation skills\.

+ Previously demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse populations and cultures\.

+ Basic proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite of products including Word, Excel and PowerPoint and Mac Mail\.
