Job Details

The Office of Planning and Institutional Effectiveness (OPIE) Specialist is a central position that reports to the Vice President for Planning and Institutional Effectiveness, and provides support for data-related initiatives of OPIE. The OPIE Specialist is primarily responsible for monitoring data integrity, policies on data retrieval and dissemination, coordination of data mining efforts, supervision of data management software applications, as well as data retrieval and analytics, including reports on enrollment for SUNY, the Voluntary Framework for Accountability, IPEDS, etc.  The duties of the Specialist include, but are not limited to:


  • Provides support for all data management initiatives for the Office of Planning and Institutional Effectiveness (OPIE)
  • Reviews global data management, governance, quality, and dissemination across the College in accordance with compliance initiatives
  • Develops a system for consistent data retrieval for the Office of Planning and Institutional Effectiveness
  • Compiles headcount reports and ad hoc reports at the direction of the Vice President for Planning and Institutional Effectiveness
  • Routinely audits data management activities performed in Banner
  • Works with College administration, data owners, and data stewards to achieve data accuracy
  • Works with the Vice President for Planning and institutional Effectiveness to establish data policies, standards, organization, and the enforcement of Banner data governance as established by the College
  • Works with the Office of Academic Affairs to ensure that the Curriculum, Advising, and Planning (CAPP) function of Banner is up-to-date
  • Reports on progress of Banner data management governance, including metrics
  • Develops a comprehensive dashboard system for data dissemination
  • Assists in the creation of program definitions and data management goals and principles
  • Oversees the monitoring of data quality efforts within the organization and provides a central coordinator for the resolution on data management issues
  • Helps support implementation and maintenance of data management software and coordinates with the IT department
  • Oversees evaluation of all data projects
  • Serves as member of the Data Integrity subcommittee of Banner (member of the Banner Users Group)
  • Works with the Executive Director of OPIE to create all state and federal data submissions
  • Retrieves data for the completion of the annual Institutional Factbook
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Vice President for Planning and Institutional Effectiveness


A Master’s degree in computer programming/information management systems, or related field; experience in higher education; experience with Banner, a plus; experience with data retrieval and analytics; strong communication skills.
