Summary of Duties and Responsibilities:

Instruct classes in all levels of Japanese and in the Language Acquisition Center. Teach classes which may include day, evening, and weekend hours. Serve as resource person for the adjunct faculty and other personnel as needed. Instruct Japanese Culture and/or other related cultural classes in English. Participate in program and curriculum development and committee work. Maintain academic currency in the discipline. Participate in the academic assessment process including Student Learning Objectives. Integrate computer technology in the classroom and use technology to offer instruction through distance delivery modes, as appropriate and if required. Maintain IVC Japanese website. Participate in general faculty functions related to the educational program.

Minimum Qualifications:

For this position, candidates must have at least one of the following:

1. Master’s degree or higher in Japanese from an accredited college or university; OR

2. Bachelor’s degree in Japanese AND a Master’s degree in another language or linguistics from an accredited college or university; OR

3. Valid California Community College instructor credential appropriate to the subject per Education Code 87355 (issued prior to July 1, 1990); OR

4. A combination of education and experience that is at least the equivalent of items 1 or 2 above.


Experience Required:

• A minimum of three (3) years (full or part-time) recent and successful teaching experience in Japanese at the post-secondary level.

• Evidence of a sensitivity to, and understanding of the diversity of community college students, including, but not limited to, diversity relating to academic preparation, socioeconomic level, age, religion, ethnicity and culture, sexual orientation, gender identity and disability.

• Knowledge of current foreign language teaching methodologies and second-language acquisition theory.

• Experience designing and writing curriculum for Japanese.

• Demonstrated teaching experience using recent communicative methodology.

• Fluency in spoken and written Japanese and English at a native-speaker level.


Desired Qualifications:

• Demonstrated effectiveness as a classroom instructor of Japanese at the college level.

• Ability to mentor adjunct faculty and coordinate the Japanese program.

• Experience in teaching Japanese language courses in Japanese for non-Japanese speakers.

• Knowledge and ability to integrate computer technology in the classroom and be able to use such technology to offer curriculum and instruction through distance delivery modes, as appropriate.

• Academic work beyond the Master’s degree in the subject areas listed in the Summary of Duties and Responsibilities below.

• Knowledge of and experience in developing and maintaining student Learning Outcomes (SLOs).
