Position Summary Information
Los Angeles Mission College seeks a full-time tenure track Interior Design Instructor who has experience in professional industry, in teaching a breadth of Interior Design courses and in developing Career Technical Education programs. The Los Angeles Community College District announces an opening for a full-time tenure track Interior Design Instructor position at Los Angeles Mission College (LAMC), a two-year community college that serves more than 12,000 students from diverse socio-economic backgrounds. The College is one of nine in the Los Angeles Community College District. Founded in 1975, LAMC is located in the scenic foothill community of Sylmar and has strong historical ties to the neighboring communities of San Fernando, Pacoima, Mission Hills, North Hills, Panorama City and Granada Hills. In recent years, the institution’s enrollment base has expanded to include many of the communities throughout the greater San Fernando Valley, as well as Canyon Country and Santa Clarita.
The College provides excellent transfer, basic skills, dual enrollment, and career and technical education programs. The Los Angeles Mission College Arts, Media & Performance Department is seeking exceptional applications for a full-time tenure track position in Interior Design. The successful candidate will possess a passion for teaching, have a background and expertise in interior design, and can assist in the development of Interior Design, Career Technical Education programs. Current Interior Design programs include Associate in Arts for Interior Design, Certificate of Achievement in Interior Design and Certificate of Accomplishment in Introduction to Space Planning. The department is planning to expand its courses and programs to include a development of a certificate in landscape architecture and L.E.E.D certification preparation.
The department, which includes 7 full-time faculty and over 20 adjunct faculty in the disciplines of art, art history, cinema, humanities, interior design, multimedia, music, photography, and theater; is a dynamic and collaborative group which strives to provide arts programs that support student success. The department is seeking an innovative and creative individual with a demonstrated commitment to interior design; and hopes to attract an educator who will assist in the development of the Interior Design program, has expertise in industry, career technical education, curriculum development, has a passion for teaching, and can develop ties with the diverse communities the college serves.
The college is anticipating the opening of the new Arts, Media & Performance building, which will house our programs and includes an Interior Design Studio and Library; a 150 seat Theater, a Sculpture/Scene Shop, a Music Recital Hall, an Art Gallery, and other shared computer laboratories and art studio classrooms.
At Los Angeles Mission College, successful faculty applicants will demonstrate the ability to promote:

Any Bachelor’s degree and two years of professional experience; or any Associate degree and six years of Professional Experience. The Professional Experience must be directly related to the faculty member's teaching assignment.
Duties and Responsibilities of Interior Design Instructor:
Teach classes such as Introduction to Interior Design, Textiles, Drafting for Interior Designers, Residential Space Planning, Kitchen and Bath Design, Building Codes, Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA) Requirements, Computer Aided Design and Drafting for Interior Design as assigned and scheduled;
Respond to various student learning styles by utilizing a variety of teaching styles;
Expand and develop new programs in Interior Design; Develop resources, materials and strategies, including interior design technology, to teach students in a multicultural environment;
Participate in the Career Technical Education Committee;
Develop the Interior Design Advisory Board to promote grant activities and internship opportunities for students;
Collaborate with faculty in the department;
Implement Career Technical Education outreach in high schools;
Advise students on pathways to careers and transfer within our programs;
Participate in and/or lead department workshops and teaching demonstrations.

Academic and professional area required of all full-time instructors at LAMC:
Effectively communicate in English, orally and in writing;
Write detailed syllabi, update course outlines of record;
Engage in department and college meetings and initiatives;
Participate in the campus’ shared governance processes;
Participate in curriculum development that is responsive to a diverse community, students’ needs and interests, and changing technology in contemporary learning environments;
Collaborate with departmental faculty to develop programs for student success, including participation in program review and program assessment;
Utilize data to assess and implement improvements to Student Learning Outcomes;
Develop resources, materials and strategies, including multimedia technology, to teach students in a multicultural environment;
Maintain office hours sufficient to meet the needs of students for consultation and advisement;
Participate in staff development activities related to academic and professional matters at the departmental or college level;
Maintain accurate records in accordance with the policies, rules regulations and procedures of the Los Angeles Community College District;
Work a flexible schedule, including some evening and weekend assignments;
Perform other contractual duties as assigned;
Maintain professional and ethical academic standards.
Recent two-years community college or university teaching experience;
Excellent academic record that indicates a strong foundation in teaching Interior Design;
Professional knowledge of interior design based on industry experience and academic preparation in interior design;
Experience using current technology and software to implement high quality instruction;
Knowledge of current software and editing techniques used in the industry;
Willingness to participate in professional development, stay current with interior design trends, and utilize new technology as applied to classroom and performance;
Proficiency in digital drawing and presentation software including, but not limited to, AutoCAD, Revit, Photoshop, Illustrator, and Sketch Up;
Knowledge of Interior Design practice and emerging trends;
Demonstrated experience and ability to collaborate with industry;
Ability to lead a growing interior design program and to work collaboratively with other disciplines and departments to integrate innovative programs for student success;
Ability to develop a Career Technical Advisory Board for Interior Design;
Knowledge of interior design industry and ability to help students with internships and networking;
Experience in community based organizations in an educational role;
Multi-cultural experience and/or proficiency in a second language;
Knowledge of partnerships and collaborations that attract funding sources;
Experience in grant development and implementation with a variety of sources;
Ability to establish and maintain effective professional working relationships with students and colleagues as well as community partners;
Willingness to accept varied responsibilities within the department and college to fulfill the needs of the program;
Demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability and ethnic background of community college faculty, staff and students.
Salary and Benefits
This is a 10-month, 30-hour-per-week tenure-track faculty position. The beginning salary range of $54,670 to $85,120 is commensurate with academic preparation and experience. The doctoral differential is $3,440 per academic year. District benefits include health, dental, and vision insurance. Optional teaching assignments may be available for additional pay, possibly including winter and summer intersessions.
