Instructor/Assistant Professor - Music/Band Director

Announcement is hereby made for a 10-month, full-time, tenure track appointment beginning as soon as possible on the Ammerman Campus in Selden. Suffolk County Community College is an open admissions institution committed to serving a diverse student population in a variety of degree and career programs. 

This is a Unit III position covered under the Faculty Association of Suffolk County Community College collective bargaining agreement with the College.

Job Description:

The primary duties will be to direct the Symphonic Band, the Jazz Ensemble, and also to teach a variety of general music courses (such possible topics may include fundamental music theory, basic piano skills, music appreciation, history of jazz, and history of rock). The opportunity to teach private lessons to music majors may also exist, depending on the candidate’s performing instrument(s) and the needs of the department.  Student recruitment, retention, and advising of music majors in order to build and maintain a strong band program are vital priorities.  The successful candidate will also be expected to hold regular office hours, and to demonstrate an ongoing commitment to excellence in teaching, professional development and service.  The College seeks faculty who value the opportunity to form mentoring and advising relationships with our students outside of the classroom. 

Duties will also include:

•         Teaches assigned courses in accordance with description published in the College catalog and the approved course outline.

•        Engages in assessment of college-wide learning outcomes and demonstrates the use of the results of these assessments in courses.

•         Active participation in departmental, campus and College committees/meetings.

•         Academic advisement and curriculum development.

•         Demonstration of scholarly work in the discipline.

Minimum Qualifications:

A Master’s degree in Music Education or Wind/Band Conducting is required; a doctorate is preferred. College level teaching and experience as a performer in symphonic bands and jazz ensembles is preferred.  The Director of Bands must have the ability and willingness to work well with a diverse student population of various backgrounds and skill levels, and be highly organized with the ability to meet deadlines, work well with other faculty and colleagues in the department, and have excellent writing and verbal communication skills.
