Position Summary

This role supports flow cytometry\-based basic and translational research\. The primary responsibilities will include basic operation, daily calibration, maintenance, troubleshooting, and training of new users for multi\-laser flow cytometers within a busy core\. This position also offers the possibility to undertake additional Institute\-wide research support roles\.

This role independently performs a full range of complex assignments and projects that involve intensive application of knowledge of flow cytometry and assists/works closely with research scientists\. Areas of application include cell differentiation, immunology, parasitology, bacteriology, pathogenesis, and molecular immunology\. This position has a unique opportunity to work with the latest instrumentation and technology in a progressive work environment\.

Job Responsibilities

+ Calibrates, maintains and conducts quality control procedures of major fluidic and optical systems of the flow cytometer, including scheduling, troubleshooting maintenance of two BD 5\-laser Fortessas and one 5\-laser Aria BSL2 sorter\.

+ Trains department personnel in the operation of the flow cytometer and trains investigators in the operation of data analysis software or flow cytometer\.

+ Responsible for modifications and adjustment of instrument parameters; identifies control samples, according to experimental requirements\.

+ Responsible for establishing and maintaining record keeping systems of instrument parameters, computer data backups and instrument usage\.

+ Prepares reports of instrument usage by personnel and quality control information\.

+ Reviews current flow cytometry literature for improved methodologies and quality control procedures\.

+ Provides additional technical support and troubleshoots instrument or computer problems as they arise\.


+ Bachelor's Degree


BS or MS in biology or related scientific field\.

At least 5 years experience with experimental design and experimental execution with multi\-color flow cytometric technology\.

Flow Cytometry Analyzer experience is required \(ie 4\-5 laser Fortessa or LSR equivalent\)\. Experience in the operation of multiparameter cell sorters is highly desirable, but not required\. Sorter training will be provided\.

Knowledge of BD DIVA software and hardware is required\.

Prior experience monitoring variables that affect the quality of flow cytometric analysis and skill in evaluating and interpreting the results of quality control procedures and implementing corrective action where indicated\.

Knowledge of biology and scientific approach in order to perform the full range of duties related to experimental protocol and the use of the cytometer to design experiments for original research\.

Skilled in developing new applications for the cell sorter and participation in the design of experiments\.

Thorough knowledge of regulations, policies, and guidelines related to biohazard constraints and the handling of biological materials, infectious agents, chemicals, radioactive materials, etc\.

Familiarity with computers and some understanding of spectroscopy and electronics\.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

+ Excellent written and verbal communications skills, experience communicating with peers and management of a scientific nature\.

+ Highly organized and self motivated\.
