Facilities Grounds and Day Custodial Supervisor

Initial Screening Date: 06/29/2018

 

Pay Range:  8 - at $72,948 to $102,636 (salary placement in the salary range will be based upon comparable experience and qualifications; increases are given annually thereafter up to highest step)

Summary Description:

To plan, organize, and coordinate the daily operations and activities at assigned areas of the College involving grounds keeping, landscape enhancement, grounds maintenance, weed removal, irrigation, and day custodial services; respond to and ensure participation as required for any emergency operational situation or facilities related issue that will assist in the functional operation of the facilities maintenance division and the college, for students, faculty, and staff; train, supervise, and evaluate the performance of assigned staff; perform a variety of technical tasks related to the areas of assignment and general maintenance of college facilities as needed; ensure regulatory compliance with local, county, state and federal regulations as required; and schedule the recurring requirements to support the sports fields, campus grounds, and college buildings.

 

To foster a culture of collaboration, mutual respect, innovation, and continuous improvement throughout the District; lead by example; actively participate in and support District-wide participatory governance components and activities and other collaborative processes; encourage professional excellence among the staff and promote an organizational culture of customer service, innovation, teamwork and quality services.

 

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED:

Receives direction from the Assistant Director of Facilities or designee.

 

Exercises functional and technical supervision of the grounds and day custodial staff as assigned.

 

Knowledge of:

  Appropriate application, handling, storage, and disposal of chemical cleaning agents used in custodial processes.

  Appropriate application, handling, storage, and disposal of pesticides and other agents used in grounds keeping processes.

  Basic risk management.

  Budget preparation and administration.

  Correct English composition, grammar, spelling and vocabulary. 

  Health and safety precautions and procedures.

  Interpersonal skills including tact, patience and diplomacy. 

  Methods of planning, prioritizing, coordinating, organizing, scheduling and supervising daily, administrative procedures and facilities operations of a community college.

  Methods and techniques of inventory control and record keeping.

  Methods, equipment, tools and materials used in maintain grounds and cleaning buildings and other college facilities.

  Oral and written communication skills.

  Planning and organizational skills.

  Principles of training and supervision.

  Use, storage, and maintenance of custodial and groundskeeping equipment.

 

Ability to:

•  Analyze problems, identify alternative solutions, project consequences of proposed actions and implement recommendations.

•  Communicate clearly, concisely and effectively, both orally and in writing, with diverse constituencies within and outside of the District.

  Encourage professional excellence among the staff and promote an organizational culture of customer service, innovation, teamwork and quality services.

  Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. 

  Estimate quantity and types of materials and supplies needed.

  Evaluate the effectiveness of various supplies and equipment.

  Interpret, apply and explain applicable legal mandates related to areas of assignment. 

  Learn applicable local, State and federal laws and regulations related to area of assignment. 

  Learn College organization, operations and objectives.

  Learn District policies and procedures.

  Maintain records and prepare routine reports. 

  Maintain security of confidential materials. 

  Meet schedules and timelines.

  Operate office equipment such as computer, printer, calculator, copier and facsimile machine.

  Prepare and manage budgets for assigned areas.

  Prepare oral and written reports and recommendations.

  Relate effectively to people of varied academic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds using tact, diplomacy, and courtesy.

  Schedule, assign, supervise, inspect, and evaluate assigned grounds and day custodial operations to ensure attractive, clean, safe, and well maintained college facilities.

  Train, supervise, and evaluate the performance of assigned personnel.

  Understand and collaboratively work in a complicated multi-college environment as well as within a community college district.

  Work effectively with others to achieve common goals.

Requirements

Education and Experience:

Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.

 

High school equivalency supplemented by specialized training in grounds and custodial supervision and maintenance operations. AA degree in a related field.

 

Five years of increasingly responsible experience in grounds and custodial services including scheduling projects and work activities for staff, facilities work order systems, including at least three years of experience in a lead or supervisory capacity.

 

 

 

License or Certificate:

A valid California driver’s license.
