Position Summary

The NYC Elder Abuse Center at Weill Cornell Medicine \(NYCEAC\) works with local, statewide and national partners to develop and implement innovative and collaborative approaches to the complex problem of elder mistreatment and to improve the ways professionals, organizations and systems respond to it\.

In 2016, a NYCEAC study found that friends, family members and neighbors "concerned persons" experience significant distress when helping elder abuse victims, leading to the creation of NYCEACs Elder Abuse Helpline for Concerned Persons, the first of its kind in the country\. Additional research has highlighted the important role concerned persons play in helping older victims accept formal services\. The Helpline is a free and confidential phone\- and internet\-based service which provides concerned persons with education about elder abuse; referrals to help the elder victims as well as the concerned person deal with the impacts of the abuse; and supportive counseling for concerned persons, because we know that the impact of elder abuse goes beyond what the elder abuse victim directly experiences\.

NYCEAC recently received three\-year grant funding from the NYS Office of Victim Services that will allow us to expand the Elder Abuse Helpline services throughout New York State through a collaboration with Lifespan of Greater Rochester, Inc\.
