Position Summary Information
Los Angeles Mission College seeks a full-time tenure track Biology Instructor who is experienced in teaching a variety of courses within the Life Sciences Department. Introduction
Los Angeles Mission College (LAMC) is a two-year community college that serves more than 11,000 students from diverse socio-economic backgrounds. The College is one of nine in the Los Angeles Community College District. Founded in 1975, LAMC is located in the scenic foothill community of Sylmar and has strong historical ties to the neighboring communities of San Fernando, Pacoima, Mission Hills, North Hills, Panorama City and Granada Hills. In recent years, the institution’s enrollment base has expanded to include many of the communities throughout the greater San Fernando Valley, as well as Canyon Country and Santa Clarita. The College provides excellent transfer, basic skills, transitional, and career education programs. Job Description
Los Angeles Mission College is seeking a dynamic faculty member to teach a wide variety of courses in its Life Sciences Department that prides itself as an innovative and collaborative group of faculty and staff who collegially strive to offer our students stellar educational experiences. The department is seeking an innovative and creative faculty member with a demonstrated commitment to his/her discipline, and hopes to attract an educator who will assist in the growth of its course offerings and transfer/employment opportunities for its students. Minimum Qualifications
 Master’s in any biological science OR Bachelor’s in any biological science AND Master’s in biochemistry, biophysics, microbiology, or marine science OR the equivalent.
Duties and Responsibilities
 Fulfill non-instructional duties (department and committee work, curriculum development, community outreach, shared governance, etc.) necessary for the smooth functioning of the department and the college;
 Develop and implement problem/project based lab activities in non-majors biology courses;
 Provide class instruction in accordance with established course outlines;
 Maintain necessary attendance, scholastic, and student records and submit them in accordance with established deadlines;
 Teach students with diverse academic backgrounds;
 Participate actively in staff development and professional growth;
 Participate in recruitment and outreach activities of the college and department;
 Perform other duties as assigned by the department chair and supervising administrators;
 Maintain office hours required to meet the needs of students for consultation and advisement;
 Promote the College's values for creating a learning environment of respect and fairness, while encouraging creative and critical thinking;
 Create a classroom environment focused on active learning in which all students are welcomed and encouraged to participate;
 Participate in the accreditation processes of the college.
Desired Qualifications
 Three or more years teaching Life Sciences in the classroom and laboratory at the community college and/or university level;
 Experience teaching non-majors biology, introductory microbiology, and majors-level cell and molecular biology;
 Sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, ethnic and cultural backgrounds of community college students, including those with physical and/or learning disabilities;
 Experience with problem and project based learning and the implementation of new instructional technologies;
 Experience with and sensitivity to the learning needs of students who are under-represented in science academic programs and careers;
 A strong commitment to active participation in department-level and college-level committees, programs and activities;
 Experience in curriculum and program development and grant writing;
 Commitment to securing grants, research internships and other learning opportunities;
 Strong oral and written communication skills;
 Experience with development of Student Learning Outcomes, their assessment and the creation of improvement plans;
 A strong commitment to professional growth;
 Ability to work as a member of a team with faculty, laboratory staff and student workers;

The beginning salary range of $54,670 to $85,120 is commensurate with academic preparation and experience. The doctoral differential is $3,440 per academic year.
