Position Summary

Responsible for providing dedicated and personalized support for the desktop applications of Biomedical Researchers actively engaged in NIH\-funded research in the Department of Physiology & Biophysics and Institute for Computational Biomedicine\.

Job Responsibilities

+ Serves on the front lines of supporting and advising researchers about best practices in a High Performance Computing environment and utilizing their desktop and compute cluster resources efficiently\.

+ Stays informed about new computing technologies and solutions that may be used to enhance researchers analyses and computational tasks\.

+ Deploys new Mac, Windows and Linux workstations; assists with methods for efficient systems deployment that prepare systems with necessary software and security configurations for end\-users\.

+ Supports end\-users on all major desktop platforms: macOS, Windows and Linux, both onsite and remotely\.

+ Effectively researches and resolves issues with end\-users software, hardware, peripherals and network resources in a time efficient manner\. Escalates issues when required to internal or external support providers\.

+ Supports and maintains department multi\-function printers; maintains inventory of printer consumables and interfaces with printer service vendors when required\.

+ Prepares and supports departmental audio/visual needs, such as projector or audio/video conference call setups for various classes, events, seminars and meetings\.

+ Assists with updating faculty publications database, department website content, news events and course information \(basic web editing\)\.

+ Maintains stock of ready\-to\-use laptop and workstation loaner systems for end\-users temporary computing needs\. Also, manages and organizes stock of computer accessories and peripherals\.

+ Actively monitors and resolves issues with desktop backups\. Also, assists with server backups across computing infrastructure\.

+ Facilitates and assists with the Linux account creation for utilization of HPC resources\.

+ Responds to critical end user support issues after hours and weekends as needed\.


+ Bachelor's Degree in related field


Minimum of 2\-4 years experience in a technical support, systems deployment and IT resource management role within a multi\-platform environment\. Previous experience in an academic or life sciences environment is highly desired\. New graduates will be considered with the appropriate experience, and are encouraged to apply\.

2\-4 years of support of personnel utilizing MS Office applications required; specifically support of Excel, Outlook and Word, versions 2010 to present required\.

2\-4 years of supporting Apple computers a must; knowledge of iMac hardware upgrading and troubleshooting skills desired\.

Windows knowledge required, ranging from to Windows XP to Windows 10\.

Familiarity with UNIX/Linux systems such as RHEL or CentOS with an intermediate knowledge of basic UNIX shell commands highly desired\.

Experience in a operational or administrative role with automation & deployment solutions such as Ansible, JAMF SCCM desired\.

Outlook and G Suite integration, CrashPlan, Retrospect or other desktop backup maintenance, Adobe Acrobat Professional usage, PowerPoint presentation, VirtualBox configuration and troubleshooting desired\.

UNIX/Linux command line skills with ssh, data transfer, networking & security troubleshooting, vi/vim familiarity and/or bash scripting desired\. Windows command\-line scripting desired\.

Firm understanding of DNS and TCP/IP required and abilities to create private networks when needed\.

Knowledge of various storage technologies; from spinning disk to NVMe drives, PCIe technology, commodity vs professional graphics cards, knowledge of nVidia cards highly preferred\.

Ability to perform file system repair techniques and/or data rescue methods on Mac and Windows formatted drives\.

Firm understanding PC hardware knowledge and troubleshooting\. Knowledge of Dell hardware desired\.
